Teacher’s Day in Korea

May 15, 2012

Walking across the field on my way home, I saw a little body walking up beside me. He was stretching out his arm holding something. He seemed bashful and a little timid. His mom caught up with us just as I was turning around to find one of my students beside me. His mom took his hand and extended his arm to give me a rose that was decked out in pink lace. He grinned and lowered his head, “Happy Teacher’s Day,” he shyly muttered.

I love Teacher’s Day in Korea! I had all but forgotten it was today until that moment. After a busy day, I had almost forgotten that the staff was going to a special dinner for this particular occasion. We had an all-you-can-eat buffet~ and I have to admit, I had lots of meat and for desert…three creme brûlées! Hey, don’t judge. I never get to eat that here! ^^ I left with a food coma, but oh so satisfied.

Dr. Kim announcing all the staff members who are getting married this summer (including two koreans who were keeping it a secret until a certain date…oops… not so secret anymore!)

During dinner one of my former students came up to me and said, “Ms. Wheat, you know you can eat dinner with me. We have one more chair.” Aww~~ this is why I teach. My heart was so happy! =) I was already sitting at another table so I had to turn down his offer, but it was so sweet~ I did get to ride home with his family though (as not to disappoint him^^).

I realized that I had taught almost all the kids at the staff dinner (5 of the 7 kids)~ two of my former students now in first grade offered to show me where the ice-cream was and one of my current students wanted to make sure I knew that three of our K4 students were there. One of the girls moms told me that today while they were washing their hands, her little girl just randomly said, “I love Ms. Wheat.” Hearing that just makes my day. I love these kids so much. It’s always nice to know that they love you back! I think one of the great perks of teaching little kids is that you are still loved and adored by them and they want to be with you… and their hugs are the best! =P

I love my job.

Happy Teacher’s Day to all you teachers out there!
